VA
Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VA-GLAHS)
serves as the tertiary care VA hospital for the greater
Los Angeles area with over 9,000 acute medical and surgical
admissions and 400,000 outpatients visits per year. In
addition VA-GLAHS supports a system of outpatient clinics
at the VA West Los Angeles Healthcare Center, the VA
Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, and the VA Los Angeles
Ambulatory Care Center. VA-GLAHS is nationally recognized
within the VA for the diversity and strengths of academic,
clinical, and research programs. The VA-GLAHS Infectious
Diseases Section is heavily involved in NIH-, VA-, and
industry-sponsored clinical,
health services and basic science research.
Olive
View Medical Center (OVMC) is a
300-bed hospital that serves a patient population of over
one million in Northern Los Angeles County. The hospital
registers over 24,000 inpatient admissions and 250,000
outpatient visits per year. The Infectious Diseases Consultation
Service manages a variety of conventional and exotic infectious
diseases including sexually transmitted diseases, parasitic,
mycobacterial, and deep fungal infections. The division
has special interest in tropical medicine and frequently
consults on patients with typhoid fever, malaria, amebiasis,
leprosy, and other tropical diseases. The OVMC Division
of Infectious Diseases is actively engaged in a variety
of clinical research
projects including antimicrobial studies and NIH-sponsored
studies on both HIV infection in women and the neurological
complications of AIDS.
Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center (CSMC) is a full service 800-bed
tertiary care, community teaching hospital and Level
1 Trauma Center with Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology,
Pediatric, Critical Care, and Health Services Research
training programs. The Division of Infectious Diseases
directs a 32-bed inpatient AIDS Unit, Ambulatory Care
Clinic, and Hospital Epidemiology Program. There is a
close working relationship with a fully equipped state-of-the-art
clinical microbiology laboratory staffed by two full-time
M.D. and one full-time Ph.D. microbiologists. The Hospital
has a dedicated Hematology-Oncology Ward and an acute
bone marrow transplant service. In addition, the Department
of Surgery has pioneered in the development of endoscopic
surgery, and solid organ transplantation, including livers,
hearts, lungs, kidney, and pancreas. The CSMC Division
of Infectious Diseases is involved in a variety of NIH-
and industry-sponsored clinical and laboratory research
programs.
Diverse
research and educational opportunities are also available
for trainees through the UCLA
Geffen School of Medicine. Graduate studies
leading to advanced degrees in public health are available
through the UCLA
school of public health.
