PROGRAM BROCHURE (pdf)
The Program is dedicated to training physicians who will:
- Serve the clinical needs of their communities
- Design and perform clinical research studies
- Measure and analyze the outcomes of changing healthcare delivery
- Develop and implement strategies to improve the health of their communities
Our goal is to train clinical and laboratory-based researchers, experts in the application of health service research to infectious diseases, and authorities in HIV medicine, public health, epidemiology, antibiotic utilization, and infection control. Our trainees have consistently performed in an excellent manner on board certification examinations and are well prepared for future infectious disease practice, either in an academic or private setting.
Fellows rotate through the clinical Infectious Diseases Inpatient Consultation Services at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Olive View Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In addition, there are rotations focused on outpatient management of infectious diseases, organ transplantation and in the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai. The program is directly responsible for the care of over 1000 AIDS patients at several clinics affiliated with the parent hospitals providing extensive experience in managing HIV infection. Los Angeles is a major port of entry into the United States and has a large immigrant population-this gives trainees an opportunity to evaluate patients with more exotic infections associated with foreign travel/residence including malaria, typhoid fever and tuberculosis.
All three major hospitals have housestaff training programs and are major sites for training UCLA medical students and affiliated health-care workers. Each of the three hospital-based consultation services has students and residents participating in daily rounds. Fellows are expected to assist in infectious disease educational efforts through supervision and instruction of both students and housestaff.
